Lugou Bridge, also known as Marco Polo Bridge, is a historical bridge built in the 11th century during the Liao Dynasty. It is famous for its 501 stone lions and its role in the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937.
The bridge was built in 1092 during the Liao Dynasty and rebuilt in 1698 during the Qing Dynasty. It spans the Yongding River and is 266.5 meters long and 9.3 meters wide. The bridge is decorated with 501 stone lions, each with a different expression and posture.
The most famous event associated with the bridge is the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, which occurred on July 7, 1937, and marked the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The bridge is now a national historical site and a popular tourist destination.
